The province of Lualaba Province has been selected as a pilot province to launch the national awareness campaign on the Washington Accords for Peace and Prosperity — a major diplomatic agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, as well as the strategic partnership between the DRC and the US, all aimed at strengthening long-term peace in the Great Lakes region.
The accords, signed in Washington under international mediation, seek to end recurring conflict, reinforce territorial stability, and promote regional economic cooperation. They represent a key step in efforts to restore lasting peace, particularly in eastern Congo, which has suffered decades of insecurity.

In Kolwezi, provincial civil society leaders recently met with national and local authorities to discuss the content of the agreements and mobilise communities around their implementation. The discussions focused on the importance of accurate information, community involvement, and collective responsibility in building peace and shared prosperity.
Speaking at the meeting, Patrick Muyaya, Minister of Communication and Media, encouraged local leaders to fully embrace the accords and help explain their significance to the population. He stressed that the peace process belongs to all Congolese and requires transparency and public trust.
The Governor of Lualaba, Marie-Thérèse Fifi Masuka, praised the diplomatic efforts led by President Félix Tshisekediand urged political, religious, and community figures to share reliable information and counter misinformation circulating on social media.
This pilot initiative in Lualaba marks the beginning of a broader national campaign to familiarise citizens with the Washington Accords, strengthen social cohesion, and ensure that peace efforts translate into real stability and development across the country.
